Our Friend Tom Basile lives in Staten Island. His home wasn't affected by the storm but he was
immediately able to begin helping his neighbors. We were able to help him in many ways
immediately after the storm when we deployed for 3 1/2 months after the storm hit. We went
back in the fall of '13 and were able to help on a couple of houses.
Tom asked us if we could come back again for a month and help him with a rebuild. We helped with
a few things but mostly with a property owned by Enrique. Enrique had just purchased the home
before Sandy hit. Unfortunately it wasn't recorded in the court systems so he wasn't listed as
the homeowner at the time of the storm. Because of this, he was refused help from FEMA and all
other relief agencies. He also didn't have any insurance.
Tom had spent a lot of time with Enrique who often times would come and help work on other homes
as a volunteer. Tom finally began getting people to believe Enrique as he worked through the
process and was able to begin getting him help.
While deployed we were able to help build a shed, build up his roof truss system, reroof his home,
finish the tear out of the inside and remediate the bacteria/mold.
After we left many different people lended a hand and the property is now finished. Tom is using
the shed to store building materials and tools to help work on other homes. Enrique is allowing his
home to be used for volunteers to sleep in as they work on other homes too.
While there we served with a lot of local guys who are struggling with a lot of different issues and
don't know the Lord. We were able to share a lot during devotions and our time together. A
couple of the guys came to church! None of them have given their lives to the Lord, but they are
asking good questions as Tom continues to reach out to them!
