We spent over seven months in the Lyons, CO area after a devasting flood hit the area in
September, '13. During our time there we not only were able to work on over 200 homes and
rebuilt The River Church, but we were able to make some long term relationships. This also led to
us forming a relationship with Pastor Mickey and The River Church and Calvary Relief has joined
with them and are part of their ministry team. Nothing has changed in the way Calvary Relief
operates, mostly just a different place to run our finances through and elder board to ensure that
we operate in a Godly/Biblical way.
We were asked to come in and help with the rebuilding that was still going on while we had some
down time. We spent two months doing several things, mostly working on Jule's home and then
There was also a small flood while we were there. The Lyons Water Dept erroneously put too much
water pressure through the city system. This caused some water heaters relief valves to fault and
water to gush into the homes. We were able to immediately respond and help cleanup three homes
so that no extensive damage, repairs or costs were incurred by the homeowners. God had us right
where we were needed!
Jule only had some punch list items that needed done. We were close to finishing when her home
caught fire due to a fire in her attic. Unfortunately the home was severely damaged and we
weren't able to continue helping her with her home. She had great fire insurance so we spent a
couple of weeks helping her work through the insurance process and ensure that the contractors
who were going to help her were working in her interest, which is one of the things we do for people
during disaster relief/recovery so right up our alley! Once again God had us in just the right place
at the right time! Pray for Jules as she has been to church many times but has still refused to
give her life over to the Lord. She has also decided to finish her home, sell everything and move
to Belize. No matter where she goes, she can't hide from God!
We then were able to help Joe. His home was mostly destroyed. It had been built in three
sections. The original was around 100 years old, then another that was almost built at the same
elevation and finally the last part which was flooded but structurally sound. The city agreed to let
him remove the center/second stage of his home and lift/remodel the third stage, leaving the
original home intact but not rebuildable, though he can use it for storage. When we started
working on his home there had been a lot of work done by well meaning volunteers, but
unfortunately the work they did was subpar and had to be redone. We ended up repainting all of
the ceilings, walls and doors. We removed the door trim and replaced it with custom trim along
with custom base boards that Mary Jo and I made and finished.
Joe still had some things to figure out but had moved back into his home so we had finished all we
could do right at the time we sensed God directing us to Illinois to help with tornado relief. Joe to
has been to church with us. He was raised in a "religion" that unfortunately very few actually find
Christ in. He believes in God but does not have a relationship with Jesus. We were able to have
some thot provoking conversations and he definitely realizes that Jesus is real! Please keep him in
your prayers as well.
We were also able to help Charles & June, an elderly couple that we helped remediate and rebuild
their home immediately after the flood. They still had one of their outside doors that needed
replaced so we were able to get them a new door and screen door installed, trimmed and painted!
Charles and June love the Lord and are thankful for all His provisions thru the storms!
While there we were able to reconnect with several friends we made during our first deployment.
We continue to build our relationship with them as we pray for them to come to know Jesus as
their Lord and Savior. Please continue to pray that they would one day turn to Him!
